Our Garden Gate - Part One

If you've been following My Idaho Life, you know that we need a garden gate. Bruce has a vision and we are well on our way!

Our garden gate is going to be stockade style, with peeled logs standing tall side by side on saloon-style doors. Bruce already has the frames built. He installed them temporarily last weekend to make sure they worked.

                    One down, one to go!

Here's the other side. OK, that works. Now the big test...

                            Yay! It works!

Now the fun part - fitting the logs onto the frame. You already saw Chainsaw Chap cutting down the dead trees that we are going to use on this project. Here are two of them in place to show how we're going to build the gates. Just imagine five or six more poles on each side, slowly descending in height, to complete the gate. It will kind of look like the top of a tree.

Now, we aren't just cutting trees down and sticking them on the gate. First, we have to peel them with a draw knife. The previous owner of this house had a log-peeling station already made. Four posts with notches hold the log so you can straddle it and use the draw knife. Thank you, John!

I even learned how to peel logs. It's actually pretty fun!

It sure makes me appreciate my ancestors and what they had to do just to build a simple garden gate. Imagine doing all of this times a thousand to build a house!

So much more satisfying than going down to the box store and buying a ready-made gate. I love My Idaho Life!
